Inspired by the nomads tents of Central Asia, FinGer builds yurts which retain many of the features and construction methods of the traditional yurt while making a few modifications for a northern European climate.
The main difference is that instead of the traditional felt covering we use coated canvas to cover our yurts. This means that our yurt frames can be made much lighter as canvas has a greater tensile strength than felt. This is achieved by allowing a larger wall spacing which in turn means the use of less components to construct the frame. Another significant difference is that our yurts have a steeper roof pitch for better water/snow run-off.
FinGer offer yurts that are made by hand, using local materials. Frames are constructed from hardwoods, predominantly Birch, Rowan and Willow. The covers are made from 400g/m2 coated cotton/polyester canvas, which is water, fire and rot proofed.
